Fibery vs Notion (2026): Relational Data Model vs Document-First Workspace

Fibery and Notion are both flexible work platforms built on user-defined databases, but they resolve the same problem differently: Notion starts from the document and adds databases to it, while Fibery starts from a relational data model and adds documents to that. This comparison covers the data model, relations, views and reporting, automation, permissions, AI and pricing as of August 2026, and identifies which team profile each one fits.

The Bottom Line: Notion is the lower-configuration choice for document-centred teams that want a small administration surface and a large ecosystem. Fibery is the stronger fit when the work does not fit a page hierarchy: bidirectional relations across Spaces, formulas that aggregate over collections, reporting over the model, free unlimited read-only seats, and a hosted MCP server that is unlimited even on the free plan. The two mid tiers cost the same at $20 per user per month billed annually, so the decision is about shape rather than price.

Data model: relational first vs document first

Notion's primitive is the page. Databases are collections of pages, and every row opens as a document. That suits material that is mostly prose with some structure, which is why teams reach for it for wikis, specs and meeting notes.

Fibery's primitive is the Database. Entities are records that may have Documents attached rather than documents that happen to have properties. The difference shows up in three places. Relations in Fibery are always bidirectional and visible from both ends, where Notion relations are one-directional unless the two-way toggle is enabled. Fibery relations cross Space boundaries and can point a Database at itself, which supports hierarchies of arbitrary depth; Fibery's own comparison page attacks Notion on exactly this point, claiming deep hierarchies are not possible there, which is a vendor claim rather than a tested finding. And Fibery formulas can traverse a relation and aggregate over a collection in one expression, where Notion requires a rollup, and rollups cannot be nested because, in Notion's words, that "could create unintended loops".

Views and reporting

Both offer table, board, calendar, timeline and gallery-style displays. Fibery adds Gantt (shareable only on Pro and above), Map, Feed, Dashboard and a Reports view with four visualisation types, and Reports can draw on external sources including Google Sheets, Jira and MongoDB. Two Fibery limits are worth stating: reports cannot traverse relations, so a Lookup field has to be materialised first, and report calculation syntax is a different language from database formula syntax, which the vendor flags in its own documentation.

Notion charts are capped at one on the Free plan and unlimited on paid plans, and Dashboards that combine charts, tables and lists in one view are Business and Enterprise only.

Note that Fibery's own surfaces disagree about how many view types exist. The User Guide lists ten data views plus Forms and two content views; the features page's "Customizable Views" entry names only eight and leaves Forms, Charts and Dashboards to appear elsewhere on that page as separate features rather than as view types; the homepage lists twelve and adds Gallery, which the documentation describes as a Board view with image covers rather than a distinct type.

Automation

Fibery gives every plan, including Free, two real automation types: Rules with created, updated, linked, unlinked and schedule triggers, and Buttons. The Free allowance is 250 runs a month, rising to 10,000 plus 1,000 per paid seat on Pro, and each run processes up to 50 entities. JavaScript scripted actions are Pro and above, and scripted Rules require Admin rights.

Notion is more restricted at the bottom and simpler at the top. Notion's help centre states that Free-plan users can create Slack notification automations and no other kinds, alongside buttons, though that page is not internally consistent on the point; database automations with property-edit and recurring triggers require a paid plan. Both platforms expose a public API and webhooks on every plan.

For external orchestration, Fibery has a Zapier app that polls, a Make app with instant triggers, an n8n community node it builds itself, and a Pipedream app. Notion's third-party integration catalogue is the larger of the two, which matters when the automation has to reach a long tail of other systems.

Permissions

This is the clearest functional gap in each direction. Fibery grants access at Space, Database and Entity level with user groups and Custom Access Templates, but access is additive and "is always extended and never overridden on a lower level of hierarchy", and there are no field-level permissions with none planned. The documented workaround is to split sensitive fields into a separate linked Database.

Notion's granular database permissions, which restrict a collaborator to rows they are assigned to, are Business and Enterprise only. On the free and Plus plans, Notion's model is page-level sharing.

AI

Both bundle AI into paid plans and then meter it. Fibery gives no AI credits at all on Free, then 250, 500 and 1,000 per paid seat per month on Standard, Pro and Enterprise, with overage at $15 per 1,000 credits. Notion shows a limited AI trial on Free and Plus and includes the agent features on Business and Enterprise, with Notion credits at $10 per 1,000 monthly credits ($13 per 1,000 annual credits) and restricted to those two plans.

The structural difference is strategy. Fibery has said publicly it will not invest heavily in its own internal agents, and instead runs a hosted MCP server, listed as unlimited on every plan including Free, that lets an external assistant query, write, and modify the workspace schema directly. Notion's pricing page does not list an equivalent hosted MCP entitlement.

Pricing side by side

Fibery: Free $0 for up to 10 users, Standard $12, Pro $20, Enterprise $40 per user per month billed annually, with monthly billing at $15, $24 and $50 and a 25-seat minimum on Enterprise. Only Admins and Members are billable; Observers and Guests are free and unlimited on paid plans.

Notion: Free $0, Plus $10 per member per month billed annually ($12 monthly), Business $20 ($24 monthly), Enterprise custom-priced. Guests are free but limited to the individual pages they are invited to.

At list price the two mid tiers match exactly at $20. The bill diverges on who counts. A 40-person organisation with 12 builders and 28 readers pays for 12 seats on Fibery. On Notion, anyone who needs workspace-wide access is a member.

Which to choose

  • Choose Fibery when several entity types need to relate to each other in ways a page hierarchy cannot express, when read-only access is a large share of the org, when reporting over the model matters, or when external AI agents operating on the workspace through MCP are a requirement.
  • Choose Notion when the centre of gravity is documents, when a smaller administration surface matters, when the template and integration ecosystem is worth more than modelling depth, or when hiring people who already know the tool is a factor.
  • Neither product can be self-hosted. There is no on-premise deployment on any plan of either one.

Editor's Note: One number that shows the difference in intent: on 18 August 2026 Fibery's hosted MCP server exposed 80 tools to a connected assistant, against the 50 listed in its own developer tool-reference table, and those tools include creating Spaces, Databases and Fields rather than only reading data. That is a deliberately wide surface for a platform whose stated position is to let external agents do the work. The honest caveat is that Fibery's documentation is a client-rendered application: fetchers get an empty shell, and the only reliably machine-readable copy of the guide is the vendor's own llms-full.txt dump.
