About Mailgun
Mailgun is a transactional email service originally founded in 2010 and acquired by Rackspace in 2012. Mailgun was spun out as an independent company in 2017 and acquired by Sinch AB in 2021 for approximately $273 million. As of April 2026, Mailgun is a primary transactional email brand within the Sinch Mailgun Group, which also includes Mailjet.
The platform provides SMTP relay and REST API for sending transactional email (password resets, receipts, notifications), inbound email parsing (converting incoming messages to webhook events), email validation to reduce bounce rates, and detailed analytics on deliveries, opens, clicks, bounces, and complaints. Mailgun offers dedicated IPs on paid tiers, custom SPF and DKIM configuration, and suppression list management for compliance with unsubscribe and complaint handling.
Mailgun pricing is volume-based. The Foundation plan starts at $15/month for 10,000 emails, Growth at $35/month for 50,000 emails, Scale at $90/month for 100,000 emails, and custom pricing above 250,000 emails. All plans include the core send API, inbound routing, and basic analytics. Dedicated IP costs an extra $60/month per IP. Mailgun also offers a free trial of 100 emails/day for 30 days; there is no permanent free tier as of April 2026.
Mailgun integrates with Zapier, Make, Shopify, WordPress (SMTP plugins), and provides SDKs for Node.js, Python, Ruby, PHP, Go, Java, and .NET. The platform is commonly used as the email backend for SaaS applications and developer-facing tools.
