About Basecamp

Basecamp is a project management and team collaboration product built and operated by 37signals, founded in Chicago in 1999. The first version of Basecamp launched in 2004; the current Basecamp 4 is a re-engineered cloud product offered as a SaaS subscription. As of May 2026, more than 75,000 organisations use Basecamp, primarily small businesses, agencies, consultancies, and remote teams.

Basecamp is intentionally opinionated. Each project is a self-contained workspace with six built-in tools: a message board, to-dos, schedule, docs and files, group chat (Campfire), and automatic check-ins. Automation focuses on lightweight reduction of recurring meetings: scheduled check-in questions ("What did you work on today?", "What are you stuck on?") that broadcast answers to the project group, automatic notifications to the right people on @-mentions and assignments, and Hill Charts for visualising work progress without standups. Basecamp explicitly avoids the dense feature-creep of competitors and ships no Gantt charts, no time tracking, and no resource management.

Basecamp uses flat-rate pricing rather than per-user pricing — a deliberate distinguisher from Asana, Monday.com, ClickUp, and Linear. The Basecamp Plus plan is $15/user/month, and the Basecamp Pro Unlimited plan is $299/month billed annually ($399 month-to-month) for unlimited users, projects, and 5 TB of storage. There is a free tier for individual users with one project and 1 GB of storage.

Basecamp integrates with Zapier, Make, Calendar (Google, Apple, Outlook), and provides a JSON API. The team chat tool Campfire is included; HEY (37signals's email product) is sold separately. 37signals has publicly avoided generative AI integration in product features, citing concerns about data control and the impact on craft.
