About Blue Prism

Blue Prism is an enterprise robotic process automation (RPA) platform with a distinctive origin: it was the company that coined the term "RPA" itself. Founded in 2001 in Warrington, England by Alastair Bathgate and David Moss, Blue Prism originally targeted financial-services back offices automating screen-driven mainframe and Citrix tasks. The company listed on AIM in 2016, peaked at a £1.4B valuation in 2018, and was acquired by SS&C Technologies in March 2022 for approximately $1.6 billion. The product now ships as "SS&C Blue Prism".

The platform's architectural signature is the digital worker model. Each licensed worker is an isolated runtime that executes process objects (the unit of automation logic) and business objects (the unit of integration with a target application). Processes are authored in Blue Prism's visual designer, which compiles to a deterministic process flow that runs unattended on Windows VMs or Citrix sessions. The model differs from attended RPA (UiPath, Automation Anywhere consumer-grade) in that Blue Prism workers are explicitly server-side, queue-driven, and audited at every step; the platform's compliance posture is the main reason banks and insurers adopted it early.

In 2024 SS&C launched Blue Prism Next Generation, a cloud-native re-platform that replaces the on-premises control room with a SaaS-hosted orchestrator and adds AI-assisted process discovery, generative-AI document understanding through partnership with OpenAI, and native integration with the Chorus BPM platform also owned by SS&C. Existing on-premises customers continue on the legacy v7 stack, with migration tooling and a stated multi-year overlap window. The platform supports SAP, Oracle, ServiceNow, Salesforce, mainframe terminal emulation, and Microsoft 365 out of the box; custom integrations are built as business objects against any application Blue Prism can drive via UI, API, or COM.

Pricing is enterprise-only and quote-based. ShadowGen's procurement view across UK and Irish clients in 2024–26 places typical list pricing near $15,000 per digital worker per year for the on-premises edition, with Next Generation Cloud quoted at a premium that varies by region and committed worker count. There is no free tier and no community edition; learning resources are available via the Blue Prism University, which is free to register.

The strategic context as of May 2026 is consolidation. Blue Prism is no longer a standalone vendor — it sits inside SS&C's broader financial-services automation portfolio, and the product roadmap is increasingly governed by the cross-sell into SS&C's existing fund administration, insurance, and healthcare BPO customer base.

Editor's Note: A 2,400-person UK insurer ran 38 Blue Prism v7 digital workers across two on-premises control rooms; mean process up-time was 99.2% over 12 months, and the audit-evidence story (per-step screenshots, signed logs, deterministic replays) survived two FCA reviews without remediation. Where Blue Prism costs you: licence true-ups. The same client paid for 38 workers in budget, ran 44 against peak demand, and got hit with a £126,000 catch-up invoice at renewal. If you cannot guarantee your worker count, negotiate a usage-based clause before signing. — Rafal Fila, ShadowGen
